Haiku poetry and a strong Asian design
influence come together in my art. I was
especially inspired by my Grandmother
who introduced me to the simplistic and
profound expression of haiku poetry when
I was a child, and who wrote and published
her own haiku verse. Her poems are rooted
in the ancient tradition, while mine are
written in a modern, humorous voice that
resonates with current times.
I am passionate about contemporary
free form haiku and have written hundreds
of haiku inspired lyrical poems in this style. Some are true to form and
some are far removed from all rules with a
whimsical and abstract feel.
Educated in graphic design, my current
work brings together all of the things that I
love – design, poetry and presentation. In
all of my pieces I use a Japanese signature
as a visual element, an abstract touch, and
to bring together the cultures. I love to
create simple and elegant works and I have
come full circle from paper making and
book binding in my early design years to
creating collages and haiku gifts today.
My inspiration comes from art, music, simplicity, the senses, yoga, chocolate, nature, relationships and a sweetly shaken martini. I work as a poet and graphic designer based in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
